Nadira Begg
Nadira Begg was born and raised in Yellowknife and has made Yellowknife her home. She is of Gwich'in and Indian decent, and comes from two large families. Nadira's mother is Margaret Begg who is from the Tetlichi family, a family that spans across the Gwich'in region from the NWT to the Yukon and into Alaska. Nadira's grandfather, the late John A. Tetlichi was the first Gwich'in to serve in the Legislative Assembly and served as Chief of Fort McPherson from 1960 - 1971. Her late great uncle, Johnny Charlie was also a well known Gwich'in leader and who served as Chief of Fort McPherson from 1975-1985.
Nadira's Dad, the late Jahurath (Joe) Begg moved to Canada from the Fiji Islands in the South Pacific at a young age and soon after settling in Vancouver for a short time he moved north and made Yellowknife his permanent home. Her dad was employed at Con Mine as a carpenter for 30 years (1973 to 2003). Nadiras family on her Dads side is a large family and they live in Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and British Columbia, Canada. Nadira has an older brother Roshan and is a single mom to her son Jamal.
Nadira graduated from Sir John Franklin High School in 1995. While visiting family in Fort McPherson years ago during summer vacation she volunteered at the community radio station CBQM and hosted an evening radio show. Shortly after returning to Yellowknife she began working at the Native Communications Society of the NWT working in both Radio and Television programming and quickly found her passion. Over the years Nadira has never fully left broadcasting, and she continues to work in radio as well as television.
